Why has the Ferrari F40 got three exhausts?
The Ferrari F40 exhaust.
I recently had the pleasure of photographing a Ferrari F40 for GTO Engineering. Some of the images have been used on Social Media already, with a few more to come, plus a few to be printed.
The F40 has a twin-turbo charged 2.9lt V8, and I was curious as to why it has three exhaust pipes. Not being technically minded, I couldn’t work out the maths of 3 exhausts into 8 cyclinders. So after a bit of searching, and a couple of conversations, I realised that the central circular exhaust is for the turbo wastegate. This is the only car I know that shows of its wastegate, which I’m guessing is partly Ferrari theatre, and also to add to the rawness of the exhaust sound, seeing as its relatively un-silenced.
If you know of other cars with a theatrical wastegate, let me know in the comments below.
