Chasing the light

Sunset. Chain Hill, Oxfordshire. The home to many automotive shoots over the year, for good reason. Firstly, a great road to drive in its own right, secondly you can see a good 500m ahead and behind, giving you the chance to get great overtaking shots and finally, the light, especially at Sunset.
The challenge is the light is limited, before heading into the ‘Blue Hour’ the time photographers know as the hour after sunset. It’s worth it for the results.
This shoot was for the Lamborghini Owners Club, highlighting the V12 LP740-4S in a rare and spectacular colour - Verde Hydra. We had shot the statics earlier in the day and some detail of the car. The key shots were on the road, seeing the cars been driven in its natural environment, the fast open road.
Preparation for the evening shoot was key to the outcome. The owner had never been photographed driving before and needed to know what to expect, learn hand signals, so that I could guide him into possition to capture the moment. All this whilst I was strapped into the boot of a Range Rover! We spent more time in preparation than shooting. The other factor is that the cars need to be close, which means it can be very uncomfortable at first as you are driving against your natural instincts. A couple of practise runs got everyone feeling comfortable and knowing what to expect. What we had also done was run through the shot list that I had created with the client. Everyone know what had to be done and we were all working towards the common goal.
